How to set up the subject-facing progression widget?

Modified on Wed, 6 Mar, 2024 at 5:05 PM

Although patients are the main subject to clinical trials, they most of the time do not have transparent insights on their own performance or improvements during the trial, often resulting in demotivation or frustration as improvements are not directly visible or detectable by themselves. Enabling the visualisation of relevant data points to the patient has the potential to improve motivation, decrease drop-out rates and lead to successful trial completion. The represented data point however needs to be carefully selected. It needs to be ethically justifiable, meet regulatory requirements and should contribute to the motivation of the patient in order to exploit the full potential.

With the subject-facing progression widget, patients are able to follow the progression of a specific key value relevant to their respective trial. This value can be entered both by the patient him / herself in the ePRO or by the investigator inside the eCRF.

Example:

A new therapy to decrease the cholesterol value for patients is under research. A positive side effect is the loss of weight for the patient. The cholesterol and weight development can be displayed to the patient via the ePro to give full transparency on his/her improvement and contribute to his/her motivation of completing the trial successfully with a higher compliance.

Preconditions:

  • Both the "ePRO" and the "Subject-facing analytics" modules must be enabled for your study
  • At least one ePRO step must be added to the workflow

The following (numeric) input fields can be visualized:

  • Number field
  • Drop down (numeric value)
  • Slider (numeric value)
  • Single choice (numeric value)
  • Smart field

Navigate to Step 4: Workflows.
Click on the "Subject-facing analytics" tab.
Click "Add widget".
Click the "Edit" button on the added widget to open the widget settings.

Edit a widget name that will also serve as the widget header visible to the patient inside the ePRO view.
Add a explanatory description of the widget that will be shown to the patient inside the ePRO.
Select the form including the field, you would like to visualize for the patient as well as the respective input field.
Choose the horizontal axis label. By default it will be "Study step" as the horizontal axis will show the display label of each study step that is visualized.
Choose the vertical axis label. By default this will be the display label of the input field that is being visualized.
Save the widget setup.

Good to know

⭐ Currently, it is possible to visualize one key value for your patient.

⭐ You can visualize a key value that is being used either in an ePRO step, in an eCRF or across both ePRO and eCRF forms
