How do I create validations – within the trigger events of my study? (Step 5)

Modified on Tue, 5 Nov, 2024 at 12:29 PM

Learn how to create different types of validations for your study.

There are 2 types of validations:

1.2.
  • Validations between several input forms
  • Creation: Only possible within trigger events.
  • Validations within a single input form
  • Creation: Within trigger events OR within creating an input form.

⭐ We recommend creating these two types of validations within the trigger events for a better overview. To learn how to do this, keep reading.

To learn how to set validations within creating an input form, see this article: How can I set up validations within an input form?

Go to the study editing mode and select the step 5: "Trigger events". Stay on the first tab "Validations / Automated Queries".
Click on “Add a new validation / automated query."
Give the validation a name.
Select the input form WHERE the validation should appear.
Select the input field within the input form where the message should appear.
Now you can select under which conditions the validation message should appear in this input form.
Choose the corresponding input field.
Select the comparison type.
 You can compare either with:
  • an exact input form or
  • another input form.
Now you can add another condition and choose a different input form. This applies when you want to set validations between two input forms.

⭐ Name your validations according to a coherent and structured system so that you can quickly find your validations after they have been created. Specify the name of the input form in which the validation should be displayed.

The same questions will appear again.
Finally, choose whether the validation should appear if all or any of the conditions are met.

The next step is to choose a message that should appear when your validation is triggered. Click on the next tab "Message".

Until this step, we do not differentiate between setting up a Validation or an Automated Query. But next, you can choose whether you wish to: 1. Create a validation , 2. Create an Automated Query, or 3. Create an Automated Query in combination with a validation.

If you select Validation choose a message type:

  • "Success"
  • "Warning"
  • "Error" - ⚠️ Remember: If you choose an "Error" validation, the data entry will not be saved.
Add a message, e.g. "The value must be between 1 and 10. Please check."
Save the validation at the end.

⚠️ Before you leave the study editing mode, click on "Save" in the top right-hand corner, otherwise the validation will NOT be applied.

Good to know: With our "Field formats" feature, you now have the option of customising the input options for number fields, short texts and long texts according to your specific requirements.
